Chuck has tasted the Timmermans Oude Gueuze and gives a good report. Here’s to hoping we get a taste on the upcoming Tour. Meanwhile, pictured here is some of Timmermans’ draft Lambic Doux from the Bécasse in central Brussels. This sweet but fairly refreshing faro-like drink is only available from this 19th Century café. I’ll gladly trade up to some more traditional stuff there, if it becomes available.
Meanwhile: This study says Belgians drank less beer in 2008. It offers no suggestion as to why. Maybe they are drinking better? Drinking more moderately? Driving more safely? (Based on anecdotal evidence, I doubt the latter.) Or maybe they just have less money to spend.
Any locals want to offer their take? My guess is that the biggest guys (InBev, Alken Maes) are taking the biggest hit. Notably, exports are still double the domestic consumption.
Lastly: Hier Stroomt het Bier! is my favorite blog that I can’t understand. Check it out. Especially if you can read Dutch.
Out of all of the multi pens I have reviewed recently, it basically comes down to the Pentel Energel Multi Function pen, or this Uni-Ball Signo MF3 for my most used multi pen of the past few weeks. The Pentel Energel has taken up shelter in my backpack, which is where my most used pens reside as they travel back and forth with me to work, while this Uni-Ball Signo sits at home, alone on the desk anxiously awaiting my return from work each night. You could say I prefer the Energel of the two – and you would be right – but the Signo is a pretty darn good pen on its own.
The best I can say about this pen is that it works. That is a compliment for sure – you won’t believe how many pens don’t that aren’t even broken. Click to the left, black 0.5mm gel cartridge. Click to the right, red 0.5mm gel cartridge. Click further to the right, 0.5mm pencil. The gel ink lays down great lines, as you would expect from Uni-Ball, and the pencil is pretty decent. The clear barrel is extra cool points, but you can grab it in black, blue, pink, and white as well.
But I keep going back to the Energel. I don’t know if is the needle tip that gets me or what – I just like it better. Don’t worry little Uni-Ball Signo MF3 multi pen, I’ll be home soon.

No, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. President Obama met today at Buckingham Palace with the Queen, and our forward thinking commander-in-chief brought along a little tech for gifting purposes. Obama presented Elizabeth II with an iPod containing video from her 2007 visit to the States. In return, the first family received what is apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries to the Palace — a silver-framed photo of the Queen and her husband. At a glance, it seems like Obama has a thing for gadgets (and related media); he recently handed off a set of DVDs featuring classic American films to Prime Minister Gordon Brown… who was unable to play them due to incorrect region encoding. Regardless, the Queen appears pleased with the music player, telling the President during their 25 minute tea that she “Finally has something to listen to [her] Pantera records on.”
